Introducing Indianola Chiropractor : Dr. Laura Avitt
Simply put, I was a skeptic. Even as I received my first adjustment at the age of 16, I was wondering how it could possibly help the stabbing and intense pain in my back disappear. It may not have been a miracle to most, but that adjustment made a believer out of me. If I would have known then what I know now, I would have been healthier from the start! All the chronic earaches as a kid, aches and pains from sports, and headaches could have easily been avoided with simple chiropractic care. Well, when we know better, we do better.
I didn’t start out wanting to be a chiropractor. Veterinary science was my initial career path, but as I went along I realized it wasn’t for me. As I explored other options, I was invited to attend a chiropractic function with Dr. Beth Meints; the chiropractor who had given me my first adjustment years before. The more I looked into chiropractic, the more I realized it was a perfect fit. I could help people with a vital part of their lives: their health! And doing so in a natural and healing way intrigued me. Most people say you don’t find chiropractic; it finds you. In my case this is very true.
Palmer College of Chiropractic is the oldest, and regarded by most as the best chiropractic education, so that is where I wanted to be. D.D. Palmer founded the college in the late 1800’s, and the excellence continues still today. After completing three-and-a-half years of education there, you graduate with a comprehensive knowledge of the human body and highly trained clinical knowledge. One of the most vivid memories from my time there was in my very first trimester. An instructor was trying to keep us from focusing so much on chiropractic that we lost the bigger picture. “If I am hit by a car on Brady Street, don’t drag me into the student clinic. I want to go to the ER!” There is a time and a place for everything, and I will remember that forever.
Avitt Family Chiropractic is a family-friendly office where we strive to return you to the best health possible. We offer gentle adjusting techniques, and conservative treatment plans to help you acheive your goals. This is not an office of pushy sales people….we are a caring family of patients and friends. One of the most rewarding parts of my day is giving people hope. Having a positive outlook on whatever conditions or pain you have is vital in the healing process. The body is a beautifully created, self-healing organism. My only job is to remove all the interference I can so that healing may take place.
I was once asked to talk to a young lady because her mother was concerned she was too serious with her boyfriend. Don’t ask me to counsel teenage daughters about their high school sweethearts, because I married mine! Greg and I have been together since 1995, and happily married since ’99. Although we married young, we waited until 2006 to have our beautiful daughter, Grace. In 2009, we were blessed with a son, Ben. They are great kids, and we can’t imagine life without them! We love spending time with our family and friends in Indianola and Knoxville, and stay busy with our church, local Lions Club, and community organizations.
In case you’ve ever wondered – no, I cannot adjust myself. This creates a problem, because I become subluxated as much as the next person. There is no mystery… my chiropractor colleagues and I adjust each other on a regular basis. Health is optimal physical, mental and social well-being; not merely the absence of disease. So, do I take perfect care of myself? No. But I do drink plenty of water, eat a healthy diet, and exercise. At my house, we generally do not take anything that isn’t homeopathic or a natural remedy. Our children have never had an antibiotic, or medications of any kind. And I must say, they are some of the healthiest kids I know! Is this for everyone? Perhaps not. I know it sounds very foreign to what most people do. But instead of running for the medicine cabinet for every cough and sniffle, we get adjusted, rest, and use homeopathic remedies at times. Remember, only you can decide what is best for your body. If you don’t make the same health care decisions I would, that’s okay. I’m not here to judge. I’m here to help you reach your health goals…not mine. Just know that if you ever have questions, or are looking for alternatives, I am more than happy to provide you with any information I can.
